Zodiac is an algorithmic composition inspired by the Twelve Zodiac Guardian Statues surrounding the royal tombs in Gyeongju and the Yin-Yang and Wu Xing (Five Elements) philosophy that shaped Silla civilization. This work sonically reinterprets the cyclical and spatial principles of these concepts, portraying the rise and transformation of civilizations.
Structured into twelve sections, each corresponding to a zodiac figure, the piece employs modal design derived from Wu Xing’s generative and destructive cycles. The musical material is shaped through pitch-class relationships, modal connectivity, and cyclic transformations reflecting Yin-Yang duality. The composition was generated using KCAC, a custom-built algorithmic composition framework.
Zodiac invites listeners to experience the perpetual cycle of transformation, where the end of one era signals the beginning of another.
